NTS005: Results-Based Monitoring and Evaluation of Community Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Projects: Applying Results-Based Management Approaches Towards Attainment of the SDGs

About the Course

Many projects/programmes have not adequately incorporated participatory monitoring in their activities. Consequently, monitoring has continued to be viewed as an activity that is carried out by outsiders, or an activity to satisfy funding conditionality.
Where monitoring has existed, it has mainly focused on efficiency (i.e., numbers of completed activities), overlooking the effectiveness (i.e., functionality, utilization), for the realization of the intended benefits. Even then, the information collected is not fed back to the users. This has led to delayed or no action taken on problems identified leading to unreliability of services and collapse of installations, contributing to the projects/programs not achieving the intended results.
The course introduces new approaches and strategies for in-building monitoring into projects/program activities. The course emphasizes results-based management approach, the involvement of users in the process of identifying issues for monitoring, data collection, analysis and use of information for taking action.
